3 Most Common Issues With Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless AC is one of the best innovations to come across the HVAC industry in a long time. While it’s powerful, it’s not an infallible solution to cooling your home. You may still find yourself panic-typing “AC repair near me” into Google when something goes wrong, but today, we’re here to prevent all of that.

Instead of worrying, let’s talk about the three most common issues with ductless AC that you’re bound to run into at one point or another. That way, you can know what’s happening to your ductless unit as it happens instead of being caught completely off-guard.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerants are dangerous. It’s supposed to stay in a closed loop system within the ductless AC, so when it leaks, you know there’s a big problem. This usually happens when the metal of the closed-loop system begins to erode, which can happen with use and the passage of time.

Either way, it’s not a good thing. We want to locate the source of the leak as soon as possible, patch it up, make sure the line will hold, and replace any missing refrigerant. If you notice refrigerant leaks, indoors or outdoors, shut down your AC and contact us immediately.

Issues With Proper Airflow

Airflow is critical because after all, it’s a forced air system. When your unit can’t pull in proper amounts of air, it runs into major issues. This can include your system freezing because the refrigerant isn’t getting sufficient warm air from inside your home to the condenser.

Airflow problems almost always happen as a result of dirty filters. Thankfully, many ductless AC units are equipped with built-in filters that you can remove and clean whenever you get around to it. While a standard air conditioner that uses large single-use filters can go 30-90 days before you apply a new filter, you should get in the habit of cleaning your ductless AC air filters once every week or every few weeks at best to maintain optimal airflow.

Electrical Problems

An electrical issue is difficult to spot, unless it results in total loss of power. If your home’s power is fine, but your ductless AC isn’t working, it could be a myriad of problems: loose wiring, circuit board failure, or it could be due to faulty installation.

The installation process is important. It sets up your ductless AC’s entire likelihood of long-term success, so when that step isn’t done right, it can lead to various electrical issues. We’ll take a look at your unit and correct whatever electrical mistakes happened during installation.
